Post icon Do you sell online? Are your terms legal?

If you sell on-line, whether large or small and you despatch goods then you definitely need to be clued up on the Distance Selling Regulations.  If you don’t then you might get a nudge from the Office of Fair Trading and some unhappy customers.  Basically the act provides the customer 7 days as a cool-off period for which they can notify you that they intend to return the goods and then a further period in which to actually do so.  As the seller you are also obliged to refund the full amount including the postage cost originally charged and without additional charges.  You can read more info on the OFT website.

Post icon Google Labs tool answers how much of your site do people see?

google-browser-size

The Google Labs Browser Size tool overlays a visual guide to fundamentally help you assess whether your audience can see the important bits without the need to scroll (http://browsersize.googlelabs.com/).  The core problem is that while offering some degree of use vertically, if you have a centred column (as this website does) then it shows at your browser width and does not update the visuals.  The other item to bear in mind, is that with the wealth of add-ons and widgets, some people may have a crowded tool and in effect see less vertically than it suggests.  Its certainly a good point to revisit and can be useful to think again on what you want people to get from your site and whether they can see that when they first land at your site.

Post icon Google Sidewiki a success

sidewiki_logo

Google hails the 2 month entrance of Google Sidewiki a huge success.  It can be a great way to portray important information or a welcome to users of a page, or to alert them that a particular item on that page may be incorrect or in need of amending.

With public views pinned to the web page it will be interesting to see how web masters can protect themselves from unjust comments, though each wiki is given vote as to whether it was useful or not and each falls under their terms and conditions, which are likely to be quite stringent.  Google’s blog post shows some great examples of how it might be of use to your website, particularly in the conveying of accurate and timely information.

Post icon 10 Things to do after installing the wonderful WordPress

WordPress Logo

If you are new to WordPress or would like some tips on some things you might want to do or think about next, then read on. For our customers, we will have taken care of some of the points for you, which are marked.

1. Change the Admin password (COMPLETED)

During the install of WordPress you are issued a generated password, which if you haven’t changed yet you may wish to in case you lose the welcome email and block yourself from the admin section. Remember to make your password stronger with lower and upper case letters, numbers and allowed symbols.

2. Activate the Akismet plugin

Your standard WordPress install comes with a dormant plugin named Akismet, which is great in the fight against spam and will help protect you. It also gives you statistics on its success, so you can marvel at the number of comments you no longer have to mark as spam.

  1. Go to the Plugins page in the WP admin area and activate the Akismet plugin
  2. To complete the Akismet activation you will need an API key. You can get this by registering on WordPress.com, then viewing your profile.
  3. Now go to Plugins > Akismet Configuration, and paste in your key.

Post icon Using Google Docs as a quick and easy CMS

In search for a simple CMS to use on a holding page, my thoughts turned to Google Doc’s.  10 minutes later I had a script that works very nicely, so thought I would share it. To use:

  1. Create a Google Document
  2. Click ‘Share’
  3. Click ‘Publish as a website…’
  4. Copy and paste the document reference into the script e.g. http://docs.google.com/View?id=dd9zpc9r_4jh8qv76j

Post icon Adding more to holding pages using free tools

Use Twitter RSS feeds to enhance your holding page

A lot of clients ask for holding pages on web projects, but at the same time wish to keep visitors up to date. After all, there is nothing worse than seeing a “Under construction, ready in Feb 2009” when the months pass and it becomes very outdated. With so much for free on the web it makes sense to use it and below outlines a nice use to create a more dynamic holding page.

You can use your Twitter feed to create an RSS feed of updates, which can then be used to make a news widget.  For free new/feed widgets you can use BlastCasta, which even links to your Twitter feed for you if you provide your username.  You can then customise this to suit and use Twitter to keep your visitors up to date with more than a generic message.
