I thought I would post this in the thought that it might save someone the hour I have just had, chasing my tail through all sorts of WordPress code, to ultimately realise I was to blame.

In a recent site upgrade to 3.3 the media uploader stopped working, so I put in fresh /wp-admin/ and /wp-includes/ but no joy. It transpires that I had left a redirect in .htaccess to catch .html files from the original site (before we took over) and these were catching the file ‘plupload.html5.js’ and redirecting on. I immediately then correct my code to make sure the redirect only acted on files ending in .html and all was happy once more.

I have seen a few forum posts unanswered and if you want to test the above quickly:

Go here: http://www.webconfs.com/http-header-check.php (opens in a new window)

For the URL use: http://www.yourdomain.com/wp-admin/load-scripts.php?load=plupload-html5

You can then see the response, of which 200 would be correct, others may need investigating

If the above returns a 200 and you still have a problem, then best to do as I did at the start, install fresh folders of /wp-admin/ and /wp-includes/, reset to a standard theme and test again.

Just upload to your website (I did it to a test folder), make sure the link works and run in your browser. If you have any problems then just drop us a comment.

With Facebook’s update to fan pages and the move towards iframes it opens up lots of possibilities for designers and developers. App websites are popping up and offering services, which did cross our minds, but in the end developing a WordPress template to power a Fan Page seems like approaching it the wrong way around… why not look at making your theme work in Facebook.

Here are some notes to get you up and running:

Create a WordPress template file

To keep things simple, we can create a bespoke template for our fan page (/pages) as you may wish to bring in the header manually to have more control of items included, such as calling a seperate CSS stylesheet of jQuery plugins.

Add XFBML support

Facebook have a nice section of Social Plugins that you may want to use on your page ( http://developers.facebook.com/docs/plugins/ ), which work with Javascript SDK. A nice and simple way is to add the following into your section:

It also requires the following HTML added to the section:

You can now use the Facebook tools to generate the XFBML code then copy and paste into your page. As the Javascript has been called in the head and the fb-root <div> added, you can remove those from each XFBML block if present.

Creating Fan only content (Fan Gate)

A Facebook fan gate has the option to show different content to the fans and non-fans. You can add the following PHP to the top of your WordPress template file:

You can then test the $signed_request variable to see if they are a fan of the page:

Create your Facebook application

Again, there are lots of tutorials out there so just have a Google.

Note about SSL

Facebook released the option to use the site via HTTPS, which is great where it not for the fact that users will not see the iframe page at all or may see a white screen. You can track the bug (or oversight) here: http://bugs.developers.facebook.net/show_bug.cgi?id=15200

This move is great and now allows us and fellow designers/developers to really make some great Facebook Fan Pages using components that work as they would on a standard website. WordPress + jQuery + XFBML surely offers a great platform and we look forward to working with our customers on some new pages. You can view our page at facebook.com/realisingdesigns.

Any problems then just drop a comment below.
