Setting up free FTP with FileZilla

FileZilla logo

FTP programs are used to upload files to your website and this posting will guide you through setting up FileZilla primarily with your Realising Designs hosting (though works for all others too, though some settings may vary).

{+++}Your FTP program will form the link between your computer and the website, allowing you to move files between each. Please note that it also allows you to remove files, so a little care is required!

  1. Let’s get started by visiting: http://filezilla-project.org/(opens in a new window)
  2. Click the “Download
    FileZilla Client”
and find the version for you, most likely the recommended “FileZilla_3.2.2.1_win32-setup.exe “ in the Windows section
  3. Install and follow the general prompts
  4. The program should now load and present you with the following screen:FileZilla Startup Screenshot
  5. The next step is to create a connection by going to “File > Site Manager” (or CTRL + S).
  6. For Realising Designs hosting customers you can use the following: Host: ftp.yourdomain.co.uk
  7. Login type: Normal
  8. User: yourdomain.co.uk (or yourdomain.co.uk_username)
  9. Password: as per your main user/account password
  10. Next, click the “Advanced” tab and enter the default remote directory as /web/
  11. Click “OK”

Your FTP connection is now saved and the following steps will start the connection:

  1. Open FileZilla
  2. Click the down arrow beside the connection icon (top-left):
    filezilla3
  3. Click your site title to open a connection
  4. The dialog box should whir into action and should end with:
    Status: Connected
  5. If you have any problems with the connection then open the Site Manager and double check your settings
  6. Once connected you will then be able to drag files from your local computer to your website:FileZilla Local and Remote computers

As mentioned, the website files are the live files that visitors can see, so once if deleted they are firmly gone.
